Expedition & Challange

This spring Alex Gavan is trying to accomplish the first Romanian ascent of Everest without using supplementary oxygen.

After climbing Cho Oyu (8201m) in 2006 and making the First Romanian Ascents of Gasherbrum 1 (8068m) and Makalu (8463m) in 2007 and 2008, all without oxygen mask, Alex is trained and ready to take the challenge further on his fourth eight thousand meter peak.

The expedition is expected to last about seventy days starting March 31st and the summit push is planned to be in the second half of May, after a long acclimatization period.

The climb will be done from Nepal, on the South side of Everest via the “normal” Hillary route. Four intermediate camps will be established between Base Camp (5300m) and the summit at around 6000m, 6400m, 7200m and in the “Death Zone”at 8000m.

The team is as usual, super small, comprising in three good friends. Up on the mountain Alex will join forces with Italian Simone La Terra who is going for Lhotse. Their route is common till Camp Three. In the Base Camp Alex will have the support of Nepali Kumar Rai and Lhakpa Sherpa as cook and cook helper.

News from the expedition will often be brought to you via this website, TV, Radio and printed press.

Stay tuned !
